Human Cancer Biology NGAL Expression Is Elevated in Both Colorectal Adenoma–Carcinoma Sequence and Cancer Progression and Enhances Tumorigenesis in Xenograft Mouse Models

چکیده
Purpose: There is growing evidence implicating that neutrophil gelatinase–associated lipocalin (NGAL) plays a role in the development and progression of cancers. However, the effect of NGAL in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) has not been clearly elucidated. In this study, we investigated the role of NGAL in the tumorigenesis and progression of CRC and evaluated the clinical value of NGAL expression. Experimental Design: We examined NGAL expression in 526 colorectal tissue samples, including 53 sets of matched specimens (histologically normal mucosa, adenomas, and carcinomas) using immunohistochemical analysis. In CRCs, correlations between NGAL expression and clinicopathologic parameters were analyzed, and survival analysis was conducted. The role of NGAL was further tested using mouse

Background and objectives: Modeling cancer in vivo is a very important tool to investigate cancer pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer progression. Laboratory mice are the most common animal used for rebuilding human cancer in vivo. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are the main reason of failure in cancer therapy because of tumor relapse and metastasis. Isolation of cancer stem cell...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Relationship between Peroxisome Proliferator Receptors (PPARα, PPARγ, and PPARδ) Expression and Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in Patients with Colorectal Cancer
Introduction: Studies have shown that an increase in carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is associated with the progression of colorectal cancer and is considered a sensitive diagnostic factor for CRC. Moreover, the role of peroxisome proliferators (PPARs) has recently been considered in colorectal cancer. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the expression level of PPARs and CEA...
متن کاملThe Role of Cyclooxygenase-2 in Signaling Pathways Promoting Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Various factors are involved in the development and progression of this disease. One of these agents is cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). COX-2 is a product of the PTGS2 gene and converts free arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. COX-2 is not naturally expressed in most normal cells. Noticeably, the increased expression of COX-2 has been ...
متن کاملBiological and Clinicopathological Significance of Cripto-1 Expression in the Progression of Human ESCC
Background: Human Cripto-1, a member of the EGF-CFC family, is involved in embryonic development, embryonic stem cell maintenance, and tumor progression. It also participates in multiple cell signaling pathways including Wnt, Notch, and TGF-β. Remarkably, it is expressed in cancer stem cell (CSC) compartments, boosting tumor cell migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. Although Cripto-1 is ...
